Cat Emergencies ; Why is it always at 1AM?

I took all three black cats to the vets on Tuesday for their annual, and to have their teeth checked.   Its real important to have your cats teeth checked especially after the age of five ( or so ) because some species of felines are prone to gum diseases, and it can become a huge problem - as opposed to a not so huge problem - really fast.
Mira and Mystic both have dental problems and will need cleaning, plus Mystic has an ulcer on her gum, and right above her favorite fang, is an area where the nerve ending is exposed.
The vet did the fecal exam, the physical exam, and Mystic had blood tests because she will be having the dental surgery soon.
The bill was 322.00.  But then, I got an invoice in the mail today and they forgot to include the fecal exam, so add on another 690 dollars.

Going to the vet used to be reasonable.  Not so much now that theyve figured out that we treat our pets like family.

So, Mona was the only one who seemed to be OK.  Mona is "the nasty cat", and Mona stars in most of my cat videos because shes so "likeable".    Mona was about 5 when I got her, she had JUST been spayed...BUT.. are you ready for this.. her front claws had been removed.  So not spayed, but declawed.  What truly awful person did this to her?

Last night ( wed ) Mona went to the box and stayed there a really long time.  So I took a look, and she stayed "in position" for at least another three minutes.  so I poked her in the back and wondered if cats zone out in the toilet like we do.  No, Mona growled, and jumped out of the box.  I inspected the box and saw nothing.

A little while later,Mona was in her personal box doing the same thing.  Now, Im getting concerned, but I took Mona to bed and we laid there for about 20 minutes when Mona got up and went to the box again.  Same thing, now Im going to take action as a bladder infection canmove to the kidneys quickly, or possibly it could be stones.  ( In male cats its more obvious and they are vocal about it - like all men who get sick  :) )

I took Mona to the 24 hour emergency vet who is about ten miles from me.  He was a great guy, but there wasnt a whole lot he could do.  He took x rays, but Mona wasnt giving up anything, so there wasnt anything to test.  he did not want to catheritize Mona, stating how difficult it is, I knew better, but I wasnt going to fight with him.   I took Mona home with some granules to put in her box to collect a urine sample.   That trip was about 250 dollars.

7AM this morning, ( thurs ) Mona goes in another box - of course- she IS a cat!  But I heard her urininating.  Im still in bed with only about 2 1/2 hours sleep, I wasnt going to get up til 8, but then Mona comes out of the box and is sitting funny with one back leg held up.  I got up and went to her, but she just growled ( typical for Mona ) and went back to the box.

I went downstairs and started coffee  and did my morning come and git it routibne for cat food, and Mona does not come down.  Normally Mona is first - Mona likes to eat, its her hobby.   As I get to the stairs, I see mOna coming down, she eats about two bites, and goes to the computer room to lay down.   I see her holding her back leg up again, so I go over to see whats up, and she moves.  After Mona gets up I see a pool of blood on the floor.

Panic.

I call my regular vet ( its about 8 by now )  and demand an emergency appt.  today is "surgery day" so when Mona and I get to the vets, we get to sit in the waiting room for hours.  Finally, they get her, and poof...theres about 250 dollars.

I really love my animals, but I do feel as if Im being taken advantage of now.  They know my history with Hazel and Phoebe - about ten grand at least, but c'mon now.

I just got a call a little while ago and the vet said I could pick up Mona with some oral antibiotic.  they catheritized her and got a urine sample, but Im not sure if its one end or the other.  I dont like this back and forth, makes me nervous.  I do know how fast small animals can die.

And cats are known to hide under the bed . not show their pain, until its too late.

Im very nervous.
